La Poesía de la Comida

Explanation of the Project/Explicación del Trabajo:
For this project we were required to choose one of the Spanish speaking countries in South America, Central America or the Caribbean. Once we selected a country, we then chose a recipe from that country and translated the ingredients, measurements and steps to Spanish. Along with that we wrote an ode about the recipe or something in the recipe. For my project, I chose to study Costa Rica. For my recipe I used a traditional dish they eat almost every day called Gallo Pinto and wrote my ode to the bell pepper. 

Recipe/Receta:

Ingredients:                                                Ingredientes:


3 Tbsp. Oil                                                  3 cucharadas aceite
1 Tbsp. Salsa                                              1 cucharada salsa
1 Tbsp. Coriander - chopped                      1 cucharada cilantro cortado
1 ½ cups Black beans - cooked                  1 ½ tazas frijoles negros 
2 ½ cups Rice - cooked                              2 ½ tazas arroz cocinado
2 Tbsp. Bell pepper - chopped                   2 cucharadas pimientos - cortados
2 Tbsp. Onion - chopped                            
2 cucharadas cebollas - cortadas

Preparation:
1. Cook the chopped onion along with the chopped bell pepper for at least 2 minutes in a pan.
         •    Cocina la cebolla cortada con el pimiento cortado por lo menos dos minutos en la sartén.
2. Add the black beans with the salsa and simmer for at least 10 minutes.
         •   Añade los frijoles negros con la salsa y concina a fuego lento por lo menos diez minutos.
3. Cook the mixture on medium heat.
        •     Cocina la mezcla a fuego medio.
4. Add the cooked rice and coriander. 
        •     Añade el arroz cocido y el cilantro fresco a la mezcla.
5. Add garlic and sour cream and eat along with eggs or tortillas.
        •     Añade el ajo y la crema agria y come junto con los huevos o las tortillas.

Crisp tang of joy, fresh and clean.
Your colors light up the market.




Overwhelmed by the zesty coolness, you make the world dance with your flavor and sing with your crispy delight.

Crisp burst of water with yellow, green and red rays of light; you are the sunrise of the mouth.

A waxy glow of flavor with a crunch of pure delight, you never fail to excite my taste buds.

Oh wondrous bell pepper, you bring the world satisfaction and peace.

Suave tacto de amor, fresco y dulce
Los dulces de la ensalada.

Crocante acidez de alegría, fresco y refrescante. Sus colores brillantes que iluminan el mercado.

Abrumado por el sabor frescor, haces el mundo bailar con tu sabor y cantar con tu crocante deleite.

Crocante explosión de agua con rayos amarillos, verdes y rojos de luz; es la salida del sol de la boca.

Un brillo ceroso de sabor con un crujido de puro deleite, nunca fallas de emocionar mis papilas.

Oh pimiento maravilloso, traes el planeta satisfacción  y paz.


Reflection/Reflexión:

Working on this project has really made me aware of the world around me. Sadly, before this project I wouldn’t have been able to name more than five countries in the Spanish speaking world. But with this project, not only have I learned the countries, capitals and nationalities of the Spanish speaking world but I have also been able to get a better and deeper understanding of Costa Rica. One thing I learned is how big and important meals are to them and how simple their meals can be. Although they do have extravagant meals, they tend to just look at meals as a way and time to bring people together. When cooking my recipe I noticed that the instructions were not very complex and allowed for individual variations. It was more of an art then a simple dish.

In this Spanish project we got the chance to study multiple Spanish and Mexican artists and then create are own art work inspired by a specific artist. We spent several days choosing different artists to study. In the end I chose to study a Spanish artist named Joan Miró. After creating our art piece, we were required to write an artist statement in Spanish. This statement was written to describe the artist we chose, our art work and why we chose the artist we did. To help write this paper, we learned new vocabulary of shapes, body parts and colors. Along with this project we learned how to say simple conversation starters so we were able to have a conversation in Spanish during our exhibition.

Reflection

When looking back on this project, I have begun to realize how much I have learned not only in vocabulary and sentence structure but also with my knowledge of the culture. Before this project, one of my biggest goals was to improve my sentence structure skills and with writing my artist statement, I feel like my structure has improved. Through the process of writing my statement I learned how sentences should be ordered and formed due to what you are talking about, what vocabulary you are using, and what tense you are using. Now that I have written this paper, I feel like I have a much greater understanding of sentence structure. Along with improving my sentence structure skills and learning new vocabulary, I feel like I have a deeper understanding of the culture in Spain and Mexico. When studying multiple artists from both Spain and Mexico, I began to realize how much art means to them and how much they use art and the vibrant colors to express how they feel. For example, both Frida Kahlo and Joan Míro used painting to help them through their illnesses and sadness.


Artist Statement

Mi mentor es Joan Miró. Joan Miró es un pintor. Su es de Barcelona, España. Escojo Joan Miró por sus pinturas. A mi me gustan las pinturas porque de las figuras abstractas y colores brillantes. Algunas características de sus obras son colores primarios, líneas y abstracto figuras. A mi me gustan las formas abstractas y figuras y sus color combinación. También me gusta eso los imagen no es obvio. Son abstractos y únicos. Joan Miró es conocido por tener pájaros en sus pinturas. 

Una conexión a Joan Miró pinturas es mis color combinación. En Yellow Moon Bird, Joan Miró utilizó tres colores. Los colores sus utilizó son rejo, amarillo y negro. En mi pintura yo utilizó aquellos tres colores también. Otro conexión es sus figuras. Joan Miró utilizó formas y líneas básicas. Su pintura tiene un círculo amarillo, un círculo rojo y muchas líneas abstractas negras. Mi pintura tiene un largo círculo amarillo, muchas pequeño lunares rojos y tres pájaros negro que vuelta en líneas abstractas. 

Mi obra es inspirada por Joan Miró pintura, Yellow Moon Bird. Diferente Joan Miró pintura, mi pintura tiene fondo de pintar y arena por textura. Sus pintura inspirada yo para creo mismo imagines. Mi pintura tiene un círculo amarillo largo como la luna. Mi luna es salpicar pintando en el lienzo. Mi pintura tiene muchas puntas pequeño rojos que van al lienzo. Joan Miró es conocido por tener pájaros en sus pinturas, cuál inspirado por creo pájaros. Mi pintura tiene tres pájaros negro que gotea baja en la luna grande amarillo.

For this project we wrote two children’s stories in Spanish. We wrote one about what our life is like in the U.S and then wrote another one from the view point of someone who lives in a different country. For my country I chose Bolivia. We then read our stories to kids who are involved in the Del Alma program.

Project Reflection / Mi reflexión del Trabajo
One thing I took away from this project is how different our worlds are. As I was studying Bolivia, I began to realize how different we are and not just with daily routines but also with opportunities.  I have never really thought about the fact that I am so blessed with my opportunities to go to school, college, choose my own career and have the opportunity to push myself as far as I can. Whereas in Bolivia, most kids don’t even get to finish high school because they need to work or stay home to help support their family.
When looking back on this project, the thing I am most proud of is my perseverance. For a long time I struggled with even knowing how to make my book so I really had to perservere through my frustration of not knowing how to make the book, to finding a creative way to make the book that worked for me.    I also struggled in the beginning with pronouncing all of my words correctly when reading my book aloud. I picked a lot of words and times of the day that required a more advanced knowledge of pronunciation, so it was challenging for me to not give up and just keep trying with those words.
If I were to do this project again, I would change the creativeness of my book. I felt like my book looked refined and professional, but I think that it could have been more creative for kids to read. If I were to do it again, I would either put drawings in instead of real life pictures or a couple of hands-on activities (like flip pictures or objects you can move). That way, it would be more interesting for kids to read.
The exhibition with Del Alma / La exposición con Del Alma

Del Alma Exibition Reflection
           In the exhibition with Del Alma we got into groups of three and each read our story to a kid. We then read a story in English to them, or they read to us. This was probably my favorite exhibition so far because it was really fun to be able to interact and spend time with kids who are learning the same language. It was also cool to see how much Spanish they have learned with just a few years in that program.

En los EE.UU, sería parte de una familia de cuatro. Comería cereal para desayuno y lasagna para cena. Iría a escuela para siete horas y bailaría después escuela. Miraría televisión en la noche.
En Bolivia, sería en una familia de siete. Comería arroz integral para desayuno y milanesa para cena. Iría a escuela por cinco horas y trabajaría con mi mamá y hermana después de escuela. Limpiaría y tejería  después de cena.
